The time came for his Military Service and Ricardo discovered the world of horses. “There was a boy there who drew horses and painted for the officers. It was the first time I drew a horse. It was done with so much realism and detail that I noticed a jump forward in the quality of my drawings after my experience with Domingo Méndez Terrero”.

“After that, between 21 and 22, I decided to dedicate myself completely to drawing and painting.”

He started to perfect drawing the human form. He studied with el Mono Cantilo and Alejandro Puente; at the same time he attended the Escuela Panamericana de Arte (Pan American School of Art) and the Instituto de Bellas Artes (Institute of Fine Arts) to work on live models, until he met Roque Pronestti.

During 1981 he presented himself in the studio of Roque Pronestti who was a draughtsman, painter and did publicity illustratotions. “I asked him to look at my drawings and to teach me what he knew”. There were few draughtsmen who could equal Pronestti. For years I worked with him as an apprentice. I watched him work, I copied his drawings and prepared his materials.

In those days he exhibited his drawings in all the places he was able to: the School of Agronomy, the Rural and the Trapalandra Group.

“Trapalandra is the name given to the sky of fine horses”. “Those were the years of drawing horses, gauchos and country scenes while my passion for football continued in my notepads’ yellowing pages”.

Finally the great opportunity came for Ricardo. Through Pronestti, he started working in the Gowland Publicity Agency where he continued until 1989. “One day, a company producing an important make requested a painting to serve as a company gift and Pronestti told me to go and show them a painting of hoses I had done. I sold it at an incredible price.”

“Those years I worked with Roque Pronsestti marked and important jump ahead in my drawing which I don’t think I could have made without him.”

“I discovered that what I most enjoyed painting were scenes of people’s daily life, scenes where an instant of life becomes fixed.”

He worked as an illustrator for different publicity agencies. He continued painting and perfecting his drawings related to football.

Among his favorite artist are the American, Norman Rockwell, famous for his Saturday Evening Post illustrations in the United States, who drew baseball, football and war scenes of American life. Quiroz, Fader, Sorolla, Fortuny and the American impressionists.

“I think all these artists have provided me with the wish to paint people’s lives; thus, my favorite themes are the tango, the brothel, the gauchos and above all football”.
